Die World University Games werden ähnlich wie die Olympischen Spiele, im Winter und im Sommer ausgetragen. Mit rund 13’000 Teilnehmenden aus über 140 Nationen sind die World University Games die zweitgrösste Multisportveranstaltung der Welt nach den Olympischen Spielen. Mit Karin Disch, Loris Pellaz und Robin Oester reisten gleich drei Athletinnen und Athleten des LCR Runningteams an die World University Games in Chengdu, China. Begleitet wurden die drei Athletinnen und Athleten von ihrem Coach Gian Marco Meier, welcher als Schweizer Nationaltrainer für die internationalen Meisterschaften aufgeboten wurde.
Karin Disch: 400m Hürden & Staffel 4x400m
Im Jahr 2021 hätten die World University Games eigentlich durchgeführt werden sollen. In diesem Jahr war auch Karin Disch in Topform und unterbot die geforderte Limite mehrfach. Aufgrund der Corona-Pandemie mussten die Meisterschaften mehrmals verschoben werden und auch Karin plagten gesundheitliche Probleme, welche das Bestreiten von Wettkämpfen verunmöglichten. In der Saison 2023 fand Karin zu ihrer alten Form zurück und unterbot die geforderte Norm mit einer Zeit von 58.19s über die 400m Hürden erneut.
Die gebürtige Bündnerin startete als erste LCR Athletin in den Wettkampf in Chengdu und zündete sogleich ein Feuerwerk. Mit einem regelmässigen Rhythmus und einer schnellen Zielgeraden gewann die Langhürdenspezialistin ihren Vorlauf, erzielte eine neue PB in 57.52s und qualifizierte sich souverän für den Halbfinal. Auch im Halbfinal ging der Hürdenrhythmus perfekt auf und Karin gewann ihren Halbfinal in 57.54s souverän. Bereit nochmals alles aus sich herauszuholen stand die ehemalige ETH-Studentin knapp 24 Stunden später im Final über die 400m Hürden an der Startlinie. Auch im Final gelang Karin ein hervorragendes Rennen. Mit erneut sehr schnellen letzte 100 Metern und guten Hürdenüberquerungen erreichte Karin den hervorragenden 7. Rang und war mit 57.51s sogar nochmals eine Hundertstelsekunde schneller als im Vorlauf!
Nach einem ruhigeren Tag durfte Karin erneut in der 4x400m Staffel an den Start gehen. Der Vorlauf und somit die Qualifikation für den Final war für die Schweizerinnen Formsache und so qualifizierte sich das Team, bestehend aus Noémi Salamin, Veronica Vancardo, Oksana Aeschbacher und Karin Disch, souverän, ohne zu viele Körner zu verbrauchen, für den Staffel Final. Im Finale nahm Karin als Schlussläuferin den Staffelstab als Dritte entgegen und zeigte in ihrem fünften Rennen innerhalb von sechs Tagen erneut eine tolle Leistung. Sie verteidigte den dritten Rang bis zum Ziel gekonnt und somit durften sich die Schweizerinnen die Bronzemedaille umhängen lassen – herzliche Gratulation! Das Beispiel von Karin zeigt, dass man nie aufgeben und immer für seine Ziele kämpfen soll.
Robin Oester: 800m
Robin Oester freute sich nach seiner Ankunft in China und der einzigartigen Eröffnungsfeier auf seinen bevorstehenden Wettkampf. Der Thuner 800 Meter Spezialist zeigte in einem taktischen Vorlauf ein sehr gutes Rennen und qualifizierte sich souverän für die Halbfinals. Mit einem tollen Gefühl und schnellen Beinen machte sich der ETH-Student knapp 24 Stunden später für seinen Halbfinal bereit. Nach einem zu Beginn eher taktischen Rennen wurde die Pace laufend gesteigert. Robin konnte sich im Rennen gut positionieren und übernahm nach 680 Metern sogar die Führung. Mit diesem mutigen Angriff sicherte sich Robin in 1:47.40min den Finalplatz und eine neue persönliche Bestzeit. Bemerkenswert ist, dass Robin diese PB in einem nicht optimalen Rennen aufstellen konnte!
Top motiviert und bereit alles für eine Medaille zu riskieren, stand Robin im Finale über die 800 Meter. Nach langsamen ersten 400 Metern (56.9s) fand sich Robin im hinteren Teil des Feldes wieder. In der zweiten Hälfte machte er Position um Position gut und kämpfte mit einem fantastischen Schlussspurt um jeden Platz. Robin erzielte den hervorragenden 5. Rang und verfehlte das Podest um nur zwei Zehntelsekunden. Trotz anfänglicher Enttäuschung wurde auch Robin schnell bewusst, dass er wahnsinnig stolz über den Gewinn des 5. Platzes sein kann – herzliche Gratulation!
Loris Pellaz: 3000m Steeple
Der Dritte im Bunde war Loris Pellaz, welcher sich in der Distanz über die 3000m Steeple für die Universiade qualifizierte. Zuerst hiess es für den jungen Walliser, dass es keine Vorläufe gibt und sich alle Athleten direkt für den Final qualifizieren. Jedoch wurde dies relativ kurzfristig umentschieden und somit gab es trotzdem einen Vorlauf. Bestens vorbereitet lief Loris ein sehr solides Rennen und reihte sich gut im Mittelfeld ein und versuchte so wenig Energie wie möglich zu verbrauchen. Mit einer Zeit von 9.05,37min qualifizierte er sich souverän mit der 10. schnellsten Zeit für den Final am Donnerstag. Mit vollem Fokus und viel Selbstvertrauen stand Loris im Final wiederum an der Startlinie. Das Rennen verlief am Anfang eher etwas langsamer und wurde von Runde zu Runde schneller. Eine kurze Schrecksekunde ereignete sich, als Loris nach einer Hürde stürzte, doch so schnell wie er gefallen war, desto schneller war er auch wieder auf den Beinen und lief unbeirrt weiter. Zwei Runden vor Schluss war er etwas auf sich alleine gestellt und investierte viel Energie um wieder an die Gruppe heranzukommen. Am Ende lief Loris mit einer Zeit von 8,49.06min ins Ziel und rangierte sich auf dem hervorragenden 7. Schlussrang, was für ihn zudem eine neue persönliche Bestzeit bedeutete.
Erwähnenswert ist zudem der unermüdliche Einsatz von Gian Marco Meier. Während seiner Zeit in Chengdu sorgte er für sieben Athletinnen und Athleten, die alle eine persönliche Bestzeit oder einen Finalplatz erreichten. Nebenbei war er für das Fern-Coaching seiner LCR Athletinnen und Athleten (Jeux de la Francophonie, Schweizer Meisterschaften & andere Wettkämpfe) sowie das Erstellen von Trainingsplänen besorgt.
